SAT not only measures students’ language skills, but teaches them sophisticated English that is critical for any professional careers. Colleges are making the SAT optional, but cultivating students’ higher language skills should NOT be optional. Jen’s SAT focuses on actually improving students’ language levels by rigorously teaching the foundation of sophisticated English vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension—which will last the entire duration of students’ future careers.
Having a solid, advanced-level grammar foundation is essential to score high not only in SAT Writing, but also in SAT Reading: precisely analyzing complicated grammatical syntaxes of complicated sentences facilitates students’ accurate interpretation. In addition, writing any essays and professional reports “grammatical-error-free” is imperative for any professionals. Jen’s Advanced Academic Writing Intensive prepares students for their college and professional writing tasks beyond high school.
The AP Lang multiple-choice section is similar to SAT Reading but more challenging. Students who are trained in Jen’s SAT Reading & Writing can apply what they’ve learned to AP Lang multiple-choice, but AP Lang question types are disparate. Jen teaches the principles and strategies on how to tackle difficult question types on tricky passages, rhetorical devices, authors’ intention/purpose, best revisions, and more.
There are 3 AP Lang essay types: 1) Synthesis, 2) Rhetorical Analysis, and 3) Argumentative (3 essays, total 2 hours 15 minutes). Jen teaches students—for each different essay type—how to outline, write topic sentences & thesis, and draft paragraphs WITHIN the assigned time limit (40 minutes per essay).
Jen’s class grade levels correspond to those of top, private schools in the nation—not of public schools. In each designated level, Jen teaches students to assimilate advanced vocabulary and grammar into their own sentences and essay writing. The APPLICATION of sophisticated vocabulary and grammar to students’ own writing is the ultimate goal. Students will learn to write sentences and paragraphs on politics, society, history, and current affairs, applying what they learn
In Advanced 8th-grade Class, Jen teaches at the level of 9th~11th grade—so that precocious students can accelerate their language skills up to levels of 2~3 grades higher than their own grade.
Jen coaches 7th & 8th graders to read, analyze, and write about classical literature that students will encounter in their high school English classes: Regular, Honors, and APs. Students learn how to do in-depth reading, interpret themes/symbols/characters, and write literary analysis paragraphs/essays—properly citing and analyzing quotes.
Non-fiction reading comprehension has become much more significant for middle/high school students. Out of 4~5 passages in the SAT/ACT Reading Sections, ONLY 1 passage is excerpted from literature; the rest are from humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, which employ different vocabulary and phrases. 7/8th graders need to start on non-fiction reading comprehension and writing—to meaningfully improve their language skills.
In this class, Jen chooses articles from The New York Times but edits/revises the contents herself—to make the articles easier for 7/8th graders to understand and assimilate the writing styles of NYT authors. Students learn to fully interpret the articles and write their thoughts/opinions on what’s happening in our society, cultivating critical thinking as well.
*This class does not impose or encourage specific political inclinations.
